Lege ruimte en een levende stad
De projectontwikkelaar in mij ziet de plek en denkt: Mooie plek, goed bereikbaar, geen hinder van omwonenden, kopen, slopen en bouwen.
Het spreekt in Nederland welhaast vanzelf dat ruimte die er is, gebruikt, gevuld moet worden, zeker in stedelijk gebied. En of je er nou gaat wonen of werken, vol moet het. Ik vraag me alleen maar af of het ook echt moet.
Moeten we de inwoners van de stad steeds meer voor hun deur en op hun bord schuiven? Hebben we de stad niet al veel te vol gemaakt? Vluchten mensen met kinderen en een beetje poen naar plekken waar dat volle gevoel minder is? En belasten we de gebieden en de mensen die er zich het minst tegen kunnen verzetten, niet onevenredig veel?
“Ik wil een levende stad”, las ik laatst iemand zeggen. Ik denk dat ik zou kiezen voor prettig levende mensen.
EMPTY SPACE AND A LIVING CITY
The developer in me sees the space and thinks: Nice place, good access, no interference from and for neighbors; buy, demolish and build.
It goes without saying that in the Netherlands, almost all available space is used, or wille be filled, particularly in urban areas. And whether you‘re going to live or work there, all space must be used. I‘m just wondering if that is really necessary.
“I want a living city,” I recently read someone say, in defense of more building activity in a neighbourhood. I think I would opt for comfortable living people.
“Overwhelming goal in new housing must be to create streets so attractive that few lament the green fields which they replace.
No one much regrets land on which Bath was built: but we’re likely to be regretting for generations what is sold to Wimpey.
British countryside could be saved with 1 move: that every new development must be done by a good modern architect, like in Holland.
The problem of creating good quality mass housing was solved long ago in the Netherlands. UK just needs to copy entire approach.
The notion that ‘no one knows what good architecture is’ is intellectuals’ greatest gift to developers.
Architectural taste is not subjective. Look at travel patterns: no one goes to Frankfurt, everyone to Edinburgh. Beauty is objective.”
